Glen Johnson received a surprise recall to Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Sunday – and Liverpool fans reacted with disappointment on Twitter.
The 32-year-old full-back is currently playing for Stoke City, who sit in 19th place in the Premier League table.
England’s usual right-back would be Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne, but the former Southampton man has been ruled out through injury.
The result of the injury put Southgate in the position to recall Johnson after the former Middlesbrough manager took over the reigns from Sam Allardyce in the week.
The experienced defender last played for England in a 2-1 loss against Uruguay during the 2014 World Cup and Liverpool fans took to social media to question why one of their poorer former players was back in the side.
Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Johnson joined Liverpool in 2009 in an £18million deal, where he played for six years making 200 appearances.
He was highlighted as a good attacker, but also heckled as a full-back who was unable to defend.
The right-back has only made three appearances for Stoke in the new campaign, which involved his side conceding seven goals.
Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge were the only Liverpool players selected to face Malta and Slovenia in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
In other Liverpool news, fans reacted on Twitter to Joe Allen scoring against Manchester United.
