Liverpool fans reacted with delight on Twitter after former manager Rafa Benitez picked up the Championship manager of the month award for October.

The Newcastle boss is on course to get the club promoted back to the Premier League at the first attempt following their relegation last season.

He made a number of shrewd signings in the summer and Newcastle have been flying in the Championship so far and they recorded a 100 per cent record in October.

They won six successive games last month, including five league matches and netted 11 goals as they extended their lead at the top of the English second tier by three points.

Newcastle’s victories included an emphatic 6-0 thrashing over Preston in the fourth round of the EFL Cup and a commanding 3-0 win over Ipswich Town in the league.

Benitez has long been a favourite of Liverpool fans after guiding the club’s to a historic fifth Champions League trophy in 2005 alongside legends Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
