Liverpool are targeting Southampton left-back Sam McQueen, as they search for a permanent long-term solution for the position, according to a report.

In a report in The Sun, it is claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side is keeping tabs on the youngster, who has been converted to left-back from left midfield by Saints manager Claude Puel.

The 21-year-old, who has come through the Southampton academy, has played in the Saints’ last four matches because of their defensive injury crisis.

He has put in some decent performances, including a 1-1 draw against Premier League leaders Manchester City last weekend.

The Sun report that his long-term future is uncertain because of the players ahead of him at Southampton, including Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett.

McQueen has 18 months remaining on his contract but is committed to fighting for his place in the Southampton side.

In an interview with the Southern Daily Echo, McQueen said, “You just have to worry about what’s right in front of you, but I would hope that I would still stay with the first team and hopefully still get some game time.

“I need to try and impress as much as I can in the games that I get, so hopefully if I get any more chances I need to do my absolute best.

“I need to get forward as much as I can, defend well and do the things that the manager’s asked.

“I need to try and put myself in a position to be selected. It’s up to him [Puel], but I need to do everything I can to try and put myself forward.”

Jurgen Klopp has struggled with the left-back position since taking over at Liverpool. He has favoured James Milner over Alberto Moreno in the Premier League this season, although the Spaniard put in a decent performance in the game against Crystal Palace after Milner was ruled out with illness.

According to The Sun, Liverpool face competition for the youngster from Premier League champions Leicester, who are looking for a long-term replacement for 30-year-old Christian Fuchs.
