Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called on boss Jurgen Klopp to sign a new left-back, despite James Milner’s impressive performance against Barcelona.

He joins Norwegian powerhouse John Arne-Riise in stating that the Reds are in desperate need of a left-back, with Alberto Moreno being the only left-sided defender in the squad.

Carragher is keen for the former Borussia Dortmund manager to focus on signing a new player in the left side of the defence after the loss of Brad Smith to Bouremouth.

“James Milner has a good understanding of the game and great fitness levels,”Carragher told Sky Sports, as quoted by their website. “But of course Liverpool need to sign a left-back.

“They have sold Brad Smith to Bournemouth and you need two players for every position so they need someone else alongside Alberto Moreno.”

Doubts have been raised over Spanish international Moreno’s performances in a red shirt, but remained as Klopp’s first-choice left-back last season as he made 50 appearances in all competitions.

Carragher, who made an astounding 737 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool during his 17 seasons as a Red, believes that vice-captain Milner should not be considered as a long-term left-back.

“Milner did a good job against Barcelona,” he said. “But you certainly wouldn’t to go into the season without one more recognised left-back.”

Liverpool have trailed a number of left-back targets this summer, including Ben Chilwell, Jetro Willems and Jonas Hector.

But principal target Chilwell put pen to paper last month on a long-term Leicester contract to end Klopp’s pursuit.

In other Liverpool transfer news, the Reds are set to miss out on this former Barcelona winger as he has made a move to this Serie A outfit.
