Liverpool have made a £15.8million bid for Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi, Football Insider sources understand.
The Merseysiders have made a move for the Spanish midfielder as they continue plans to overhaul their squad this summer.
Liverpool’s offer comes after the club held discussions with Real about the availability of the 25-year-old.
The Spanish giants are willing to listen to offers for Illarramendi, who arrived at the Bernabeu in the summer of 2013 for a fee close to $35m (£25m).
But the final decision on whether to sell the midfield anchorman to Liverpool or keep him for another season will be left to new manager Rafael Benitez.
Illarramendi has been a fringe player at Real over the last two seasons, and struggled for game time even when Luka Modric spent three months of last season out injured.
Liverpool’s recruitment team have identified Illarramendi as a target as the club rebuild their midfield in the wake of Steven Gerrard’s departure to Los Angeles Galaxy.
The club have already signed James Milner, Danny Ings and Adam Bogdan on free transfers in a busy start to the transfer window.
