Liverpool have made an enquiry for Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, according to a report.

News outlet Football Whispers has claimed that a source close to the Reds have told them that the Merseyside giants have made a move for the 30-year-old.

However, it is stated that it would take a very large offer of around £20million for the Premier League champions to consider allowing their number one to leave in January.

Goalkeeper is a position that has caused Liverpool large problems for a number of years now.

Belgian shot-stopper Simon Mignolet has had his doubters in the past, making a large number of high profile mistakes, while Loris Karius was added in the summer to becomg Jurgen Klopp’s number one.

But, the German keeper has also made a large number of mistakes in his short time at the club and Klopp has resorted back to Mignolet.

This has led the former Dortmund boss to target a new keeper in the winter and Premier League champion Schmeichel could be one of his options.

The Denmark international has proved crucial for Claudio Ranieri’s team in their shock rise and even this season with the club’s poor form he has kept seven clean sheets in 14 encounters.

However, with five years left on his contract it will take a huge offer to take Leicester’s star man.

Football Insider verdict:

A goalkeeper is a necessity for Liverpool and they must bring one in as soon as possible. Neither Mignolet or Karius are good enough for the Merseyside giants and the Reds are set-up in a perfect position to challenge Chelsea for the title in the second half of the campaign. Schmeichel has plenty of Premier League experience and may prove to be a solid addition. However, Mignolet was also the star at Sunderland between the sticks and he struggled once joining a bigger club. Liverpool need a goalkeeper who is proven class at the big clubs like their last successful keeper Pepe Reina was.
