Brentford manager Dean Smith has praised the influence of Liverpool’s Sergi Canos and revealed the youngster will go back to Anfield in the summer looking to break into the first-team.

Canos, 19, has spent the season on loan with Championship club Brentford and although most of his 37 league appearances have been from the bench, the winger has scored six goals and provided four assists.

One of those assists came on Saturday during an excellent performance from Brentford, as they smashed local rivals Fulham 3-0 at home.

Smith revealed that the London club in is constant contact with Liverpool and that representatives from Merseyside were at the Fulham game to check in on the winger’s progress.

“I thought his pace would hurt them, him and Gogia when he came on,” said Smith speaking to the Get West London after the game. “We give them [Liverpool] regular reports and they’re here as well and they’re really pleased with him.

“You have to be exceptionally tough to play at Premier League level. Look at Dele Alli and Wayne Rooney and young lads who have gone in there early.

“So it all depends on how he does there [at Liverpool] pre-season [if he gets in the first team].”

Canos has yet to make his senior debut for his parent club, but will have been encouraged watching Liverpool from a distance this season with fellow academy graduates Brad Smith, Sheyi Ojo and Kevin Stewart all making their Premier League bows under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool snapped up Canos in 2013 as a 16-year-old from Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Spanish under-19 international is expected to be involved in Liverpool’s pre-season preparations and it will be given his first chance to impress Klopp.

Canos left Liverpool in the summer to join up with Brentford when Brendan Rodgers was manager.
