Joe Gomez has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury, Football Insider sources understand.
The Liverpool defender ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty with England Under-21s on Tuesday night.
Gomez had a scan on his knee today and is expected to be out for nine months, which realistically means he will not play again this season.
The former Charlton man’s absence is a sickening blow for new manager Jurgen Klopp.
Gomez began the season in the first team after surprisingly getting the nod ahead of Alberto Moreno to play at left-back. He started Liverpool’s first five matches, acquitting himself well in an unfamiliar position, before being dropped in the wake of their 3-1 defeat to Manchester United.
The 18-year-old can play anywhere across the back line and is regarded as one of the outstanding young defenders in the country.
In other Liverpool news, Philippe Coutinho is expected to be available for selection against Tottenham on Saturday after pulling out of the Brazil squad last week with a minor groin injury.
