Liverpool are set to make Mario Gotze one of two landmark signings in the coming days, according to reports.

Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius is reportedly close to sealing his switch to Anfield and fellow Bundesliga star Gotze is claimed to be hot on his heels.

The Sun report that Liverpool want to tie up a swift deal for Gotze and the club are confident it can be agreed within the next few days.

Liverpool are keen to get their transfer window dealings done quickly, preferably before the first ball is kicked at the European Championships in June, and have made signing a top goalkeeper and playmaker their priorities this summer.

Gotze, 23, has plummeted down the pecking order at Munich under Pep Guardiola and is not thought to be in the plans of incoming manager Carlo Ancelotti.

With just a year remaining on his Bayern contract, Gotze is rated in the £20million bracket by Liverpool.

The World Cup winner’s season has been continually interrupted by injuries, but Gotze has struggled to convince Guardiola he deserves more than a spot on the bench in recent weeks.

The Spanish boss opted to leave him out of both legs of Bayern’s Champions League semi-final showdown defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Gotze’s career has visibly stagnated and it is thought he is keen on a reunion with the man who made him into a remarkable force at Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp made Gotze the star of a remarkable Dortmund side that won the Bundesliga twice and finally ended Munich’s iron grip on the league title.

Liverpool were beaten in the Europa League final last Wednesday, but the disappointment of missing out on silverware and a spot in next season’s Champions League is not expected to be a factor in Gotze’s decision.

In other Liverpool transfer news, the Reds are ready to make their Bundesliga raid into a hat-trick with interest in this German defender.
