Joel Matip has been fantastic for Liverpool since joining in the summer but has been overshadowed by the brilliance of his attacking teammates.

The 25-year-old joined the Merseysiders on a free from Schalke and has started every league game for Liverpool since he made his debut during the 1-1 draw against Tottenham.

He notched up his 10th league appearance against Southampton on Saturday, keeping his second clean sheet of the season alongside Dejan Lovren.

The Reds have conceded just nine goals in the league since he came into the side, with only Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham conceding fewer in their last 10 fixtures.

Matip has been hugely under-rated since making the switch from the Bundesliga, despite barely putting a foot wrong in the centre of Liverpool’s defence.

It’s been fellow new signings, Sadio Mane, Loris Karius and Giorginio Wijnaldum who have grabbed the headlines since joining but Matip has quietly become one of Liverpool’s best players.

The Cameroon international was highly-rated in the Bundesliga for his ability to read the game well, make crucial interceptions and tower over defenders in aerial duels.

He’s demonstrated all of those skills well in the Premier League so far and even grabbed a goal during Liverpool’s 4-2 victory against Crystal Palace last month.

Matip has become Liverpool’s outstanding defender and his seamless fit into the side is hugely positive for Jurgen Klopp, who values the centre-back greatly.

In other Liverpool news, the club are still in need of this type of player to succeed in the Premier League.
