Liverpool have refused to allow defensive duo Joe Gomez and Andre Wisdom to join Celtic on loan, according to a report.

New Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers has been assessing the possibility of reunions with the youthful pair.

The Sun claim Celtic have enquired about Gomez and Wisdom moving to Glasgow on loan next season.

It is said that the Merseysiders have refused to allow Gomez, 19, to leave and will only allow Wisdom, 23, to move on a permanent deal and if Celtic match their £3million valuation of the versatile defender.

Liverpool regard Gomez as a contender for a first-team spot next season after recovering from a knee injury that halted his progress in  2015-16.

The teenager made an excellent early impression at left-back following his £3.5million transfer from Charlton last summer and kept Alberto Moreno out of the team before his injury.

Football Insider reported last month that Rodgers is keen on signing the versatile Wisdom, who can play at centre-back and in both full-back positions.

Wisdom, 23, is contracted to Liverpool until 2019 but is likely to be sold this summer after loan spells at Norwich, West Brom and Derby.

The former England Under-21 international spent the recently completed domestic season on loan at Carrow Road, making 14 appearances in all competitions.

The Leeds-born defender has played 22 matches for Liverpool and is rated by Rodgers, who is reportedly confident that the defender can be key to a Scottish Premiership title bid.

In other Celtic news, a prolific striker has responded to links with the Scottish giants seven years after they baulked at paying £3million for him.
