Liverpool’s Martin Škrtel is on the verge of departing for Fenerbache as a deal to sign the veteran defender edges closer, according to a report.

Sky Sports claim that the Liverpool man is “very close” to agreeing a £5 million deal with the Turkish the giants as manager Jurgen Klopp continues his overhaul of the club.

The Slovakia captain put in impressive defensive displays for him home country at Euro 2016, most notbly against England during the group stages.

But, the 31-year-old’s eight year stay in England appears to be over as he has fallen out of favour with his Liverpool manager.

The hard hitting defender made 320 appearances for the Reds during his stay in England, but after a gruelling campaign for the club last term, Škrtel only made 27 appearances in 63 games which signalled the end of his Liverpool career.

It is said that Fenerbahce opened talks with Liverpool and Škrtel this week with the confirmation of the deal edging closer.

If the deal does go through then Škrtel will become the sixth confirmed departure this summer with more expected to leave.

In other Liverpool news, Jurgen Klopp has been given a huge boost ahead of their opening fixture v Arsenal as Euro 2016 star is set to miss out.
