Liverpool would win the title if they made a January raid for Yaya Toure.

The Reds have made an impressive start to the season with wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester in their opening five league matches.

Toure could take Liverpool all the way to the title if Jurgen Klopp attempts a move for the out-of-favour midfielder.

The 33-year-old has made one appearance this season in a Champions League qualifier against Steaua Bucharest but was later left out of Manchester City’s squad for the same competition.

City manager Pep Guardiola has said on Tuesday that Toure must apologise to his team-mates if he is to play again, after his agent Dimitri Seluk said that the midfielder had been humiliated by his exile form the European squad.

“He must apologise to his team-mates, to the club,” he said, as quoted by BBC Sport. “If he doesn’t, he won’t play.”

With Toure’s future cast into serious doubt, now could be the perfect opportunity for a league rival to swoop for the two-time Premier League winner.

Liverpool’s promising start to the season, which has seen them score 16 goals in six matches across all competitions, has made them possible candidates for the title.

Toure would add a further goal threat to the Liverpool team, given his outstanding record of 72 goals in 269 appearances at City from his midfield role.

The Ivory Coast star, who retired from international duty on Wednesday, has also starred at Spanish champions Barcelona during the earlier stages of his career.

At 33 he could be considered a slight gamble by Klopp, but his vital experience and set-piece brilliance could be the difference if the club are to compete at the top.

Liverpool are also without European competition this season and Toure would not be expected to play three times a week, something which Guardiola is currently trying to balance at City.

Toure’s current club remain the team to beat the season after a 100 per cent record in their first five league games but Klopp has managed to build an exciting an attacking side at Anfield.

Klopp does have talented midfielder options Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Emre Can and Marko Grujic who can all fill the central midfield position, but Toure would bring the experience to help the side.

Toure is certainly still blessed with phenomenal talent and Liverpool should consider an audacious attempt to sign him in the January transfer window.

In other Liverpool news, John Aldridge has compared Joel Matip to the club’s legend.
