Lucas Leiva will miss Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City at Anfield on Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp has revealed.

Daniel Sturridge and Mamadou Sakho are also both major doubts for the second fixture in four days against Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

Long-serving Lucas pulled a muscle taking the penalty which was saved in Sunday’s agonising shootout defeat to City in the League Cup final.

Sturridge was severely hampered by cramp in the closing stages at Wembley, while Sakho is still being assessed by medical staff after being forced off in the first half of the final with suspected concussion.

Speaking at his media briefing on Tuesday afternoon, Klopp said: “We don’t train today until 5pm so we are waiting on a few things.

“But it doesn’t look like Lucas will be available. He has problems with a muscle from when he shot the penalty. We have to wait but I don’t think he can play.

Lucas is keen to stay at Liverpool beyond 2017

Red alert: Lucas will miss out on Wednesday with a hamstring injury

“With Mama, I don’t know exactly yet. We had to make a decision in the moment on Sunday (to take him off) and I think it was the right decision. Now we have to wait for the final judgement of the doctor.

“Daniel had cramp so we will see how he is. I don’t want to take any risks.”

Klopp will make a number of changes on Wednesday night, with Joe Allen, Divock Origi and Adam Lallana among those who could start after being on the bench at Wembley.
