Manchester City are in talks to sign prolific striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to a report.

The reigning African Player of the Year has been targeted by new City manager Pep Guardiola as he steps up plans to strengthen the squad.

Sky Italy claim Aubameyang is a priority target of Guardiola and the 2012 and 2014 Premier League champions.

Transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, who works for Sky Italy, claimed on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday evening that City are “getting close” to agreeing a deal with the player.

Aubameyang, 26, has had an outstanding season for Borussia Dortmund, scoring 25 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches and 39 in 49 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Since joining Dortmund from Saint-Etienne in 2013, the prolific striker has struck 80 times in 143 matches for the German club to become one of the most sought-after front men in the world.

It is said that Aubameyang figures prominently on the the shortlist of priority transfer targets that Guardiola has handed to the club.

However, City face competition to land the Gabon international from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

In other Manchester City news, West Ham have attempted to hijack Tottenham’s attempt to sign the ‘new David Silva’.
