Henrikh Mkhitaryan was named in the starting XI against Feyenoord – and Manchester United fans were thrilled on Twitter with his inclusion.

The 27-year-old has been handed an unlikely start on Thursday night and will make just his seventh appearance of the season.

The attacking midfielder has not featured for United since the 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce on the 3 November.

Jose Mourinho has made six changes to his starting XI for the Europa League match against Feyenoord, as cited by the club’s official Twitter account.

David De Gea, Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian, Ander Herrera, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have been dropped by Mourinho after the 1-1 draw against Arsenal.

Sergio Romero, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan have all been recalled to the starting XI.

United fans expressed their excitement that Mkhitaryan has been handed a rare start.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Mkitarayan has endured a very difficult start since his move to Old Trafford in the summer from German side Borussia Dortmund.

The winger has fallen down the pecking order under Mourinho and is yet to complete 90 minutes this season.

He proved at Dortmund that he was one of the most creative players in Europe, scoring 23 goals and supplying 32 assists in just 52 appearances last season.

The Armenia international will hope to grab his chance against Feyenoord and prove that he can become a regular starter.

United need a win against the Dutch side or they could face elimination from the Europa League, so Mourinho has shown some faith in starting Mkhitaryan.

In other Manchester United news, there were three things learned from the draw against Arsenal.
