Henrikh Mkhitaryan started only his third game for Manchester United in their 4-1 win against West Ham on Wednesday night – and fans took to Twitter to hail the Armenia international’s outstanding display.

Mkhitaryan has been mostly frozen out by manager Jose Mourinho since signing from Borussia Dortmund for £26million in the summer.

The attacking midfielder made only his ninth appearance for the club in the League Cup showdown against the Hammers, with six of them coming as a substitute.

But he was handed his second start in seven days in a sign that he is finally earning the trust of Mourinho and responded with a performance full of craft and creativity.

Mkhitaryan, who scored 23 goals and supplied 32 assists in all competitions in a phenomenal campaign for Borussia Dortmund last season, set up United’s opening two goals to supply his first assists for the club.

His audacious backheel put Zlatan Ibrahimovich through for the opener and the Armenian then picked out Anthony Martial for the goal that put the home side 2-1 up.

United supporters were pleased to have an extended look at the 27-year-old and praised him on social media.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

United’s win secures them a place in the League Cup semi-final draw along with Liverpool, Hull and Southampton.

In other Manchester United news, Tottenham are planning to make a January bid for one of Jose Mourinho’s senior players.
