Anthony Martial is almost certain to miss Manchester United’s trip to Watford on Saturday after leaving Wembley on crutches last night.
United are sweating on the fitness of the teenage striker after he was filmed holding crutches and with his left foot in a bandage as the France squad boarded the team coach after the match.
Martial started France’s 2-0 defeat to England Wembley on Tuesday and played 67 minutes in a left-wing role before being replaced by Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.
Didier Deschamps played down the severity of the injury in the aftermath of the match. “He is in a lot of pain but it is just a knock on the top of his foot,” said the France manager.
Although Martial was smiling as he chatted to Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny before boarding the coach, there will be fears that the 19-year-old striker could be set for a lengthy lay-off in what would be a crushing blow to United.
Martial has slotted in impressively at Old Trafford since his sensational deadline-day move from Monaco in the summer.
He has scored five goals and his pace in the final third gives Louis van Gaal a different option to his other attackers.
Martial did not appear to be in any obvious pain when he left the pitch midway through the second half in what seemed to be a premeditated move.
The teenager had been one of France’s better performers on the night and had been a threat to an impressive England when he cut in from the left, particularly when he came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half with one turbo-charged run.
