Jesse Lingard has rocked Manchester United by suffering an injury ahead of their Premier League clash at Leicester, Football Insider sources understand.
The winger, who was called up to the England squad for the first time earlier this month, is not expected to make the 18-man matchday squad for the top-of-the-table showdown at the Kings Power Stadium.
A United dressing room source has told Football Insider that Lingard was not part of the travelling party to Leicester.
Lingard’s likely absence is a blow for manager Louis van Gaal, who is already without Ander Herrera, Phil Jones and possibly Michael Carrick, as well as long-term absentees Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia. United will take over top spot from Claudio Ranieri’s team if they win the Saturday evening match.
Lingard, 22, has impressed for United since being promoted to the first team at the end of October.
Used predominantly on the left flank, he scored his first goal for the club in the 2-0 win over West Brom on 7 November and has been selected ahead of Ashley Young and Memphis Depay.
In other Manchester United news, Van Gaal has admitted that record-equalling Jamie Vardy is the man that his team most fear.
