Paul Scholes has heaped praised on Memphis Depay after the winger starred in Manchester United’s 5-1 win against FC Midjtylland.
Depay capped off a fantastic performance with an arrow of a strike in the 90th minute as United booked their place in the next round of the Europa League.
The United legend has been a vocal critic of Louis Van Gaal’s side in recent months, but speaking on BT Sport, he gave a glowing assessment of Depay’s contribution.
“Once you got the ball to Memphis tonight, the mood he was in, United were always going to get the win,” he said.
“He thoroughly deserved the goal and the European nights have probably been the best nights of his whole season.”
However after a turbulent season in which Depay has managed just 12 league starts, Scholes was keen to urge the winger to kick on from the performance.
“He has really struggled to transmit that form into the Premier League and he has to start doing that.”
Owen Hargreaves echoed Scholes’ thoughts and singled out the young Dutchman as United’s key performer.
“As Scholes said he was brilliant. Best performance I have seen from him in a United shirt,” said Hargreaves, also speaking on BT Sport.
“This is what they bought him for. Technically he is a very good player. He went left and right, he didn’t just come inside and shoot.
“He was really creative, powerful, I mean this is exactly what United expected when he came. That’s the performance you want from Memphis and the standard.
“He was absolutely exceptional drifting in and out of that left hand side. Those young players are a real sign of the future for Manchester Untied.”
United host Arsenal on Sunday in a huge game as Van Gaal’s men look to halt the Gunners’ title charge in its tracks and cut down on the six point gap between them and the final Champions League spot.
