Paul Scholes believes there is a question mark hanging over Anthony Martial at Manchester United.

The former United midfielder is not convinced that Louis van Gaal is getting the best out of the world’s most expensive teenager.

Martial has been moved between the centre-forward position and the flanks in his debut Old Trafford campaign with varying degrees of success.

He tops the Premier League scoring charts at United this season with five goals but Scholes says that is not a record to be especially proud of.

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of the United showdown against Newcastle on Tuesday night, Scholes said: “There’s a question mark over him. Is he a left winger? Is he a right winger? Is he a centre-forward?

“I would like to see him as a centre-forward. He’s scored five [league] goals this season and it’s January. A Man United striker should have 15 by now.

“Martial has showed he’s a good finisher. He should be given more chances down the middle.”

Martial became the most expensive teenager in the history of football when he joined United from Monaco last summer in a deal rising from £36million to a potential £58million.

In total, he has scored eight goals in 24 matches all competitions for United this season.
