Mark Lawrenson has backed Everton to continue their good form by beating Middlesbrough 3-0 on Saturday evening, as he hailed the signing of Idrissa Gueye as a steal.
Midfielder Gueye made a summer transfer move from Aston Villa after the Merseyside club activated a £7.1 million release clause in his contract.
BBC pundit Lawrenson hailed the capture of the 26-year-old, as he backed the Toffees to continue their winning ways at Goodison Park.
“Everton boss Ronald Koeman has competition for places and is not afraid to make big decisions like taking Ross Barkley off at half-time at Sunderland on Monday,” Lawrenson wrote in his BBC Sports prediction page. “Romelu Lukaku is back among the goals and Idrissa Gueye looks a steal in midfield too – everything is going well for them.
“Middlesbrough have still made a solid start to the season despite seeing their unbeaten run ended by Crystal Palace last week, but it is hard to see them getting anything at Goodison Park.”
Everton are aiming to build on their impressive start to the new season.
They begin Saturday’s clash in second place in the Premier League table after taking 10 points from their opening four matches.
Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Friday night means Koeman’s team leapfrogged the Londoners on goal difference and are now behind only leaders Manchester City.
