Mark Lawrenson has predicted that Tottenham will lose to Chelsea in their FA Cup semi-final clash on Saturday.
The two London rivals come to blows at Wembley to try and earn a place in next month’s final where Manchester City or Arsenal will await the winner.
Spurs won the last league meeting between the two sides, but BBC pundit Lawrenson thinks that Antonio Conte’s men will squeeze through to the semi-final by virtue of a penalty shoot-out.
The former Liverpool player believes that the game will finish 1-1 after extra-time.
“FA Cup semi-finals are horrible games to play in because all everyone is thinking about is how the final is so close.
“They are nearly always tight and this one will be the same. I am going to go with Chelsea to win it – but it will be very extremely close,” said Lawrenson on the BBC Sport website.
The 59-year-old doesn’t think that the match will have any bearing on the Premier League title-race though, after a lot of people have mentioned that it could offer either side an invaluable swing of momentum.
Spurs are now just four points behind Chelsea as they have suffered two defeats in their last four matches.
“I have heard people say that, if Tottenham beat Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final, it will help them win the Premier League too,” Lawrenson added.
“Personally, I don’t think the outcome of this game will make any difference whatsoever to the title race.”
It has been over two decades since Spurs last lifted the FA Cup when they beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 in 1991 and if Lawrenson’s prediction comes true then that wait will have to go on for another year.
Mauricio Pochettino has been widely praised for the job he has done at White Hart Lane but people are now expecting him to win major silverware at the club.
A domestic double is still on the cards for both Tottenham and Chelsea with the league title race heating up last weekend.
The Blues suffered a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United while Pochettino guided his side to their seventh straight league win against Bournemouth with a 4-0 thrashing.
