Martin Keown claims Santi Cazorla should be the only guaranteed starter in Arsenal’s midfield.
Manager Arsene Wenger has rotated his players in the opening weeks of the new season as he searches for the best balance in midfield.
Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Aaron Ramsey, Mohamed Elneny and summer signing Granit Xhaka have all started in central midfield.
For the last two matches, the 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday and the 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, Wenger has favoured the combination of Coquelin and Cazorla.
Former Arsenal midfielder Keown believes the little Spaniard is the only one of the five who should be a nailed-on starter in the first team.
Asked in a question-and-answer session what he thought about Wenger omitting Xhaka against PSG, Keown told the Mail Online: “It’s good management. There should be nothing between the players in Arsenal’s squad and if you’ve got these players, you’ve got to believe in every single one.
“If the performance doesn’t match that, then the manager has overestimated his player’s ability.
“It seems to me the only guaranteed place in Wenger’s midfield is Santi Cazorla. When he plays, Arsenal seem to get good results.
“Wenger wants someone on the ball to make something happen but so far no-one has nailed down a place alongside Cazorla.
“Sooner or later, Wenger will have to decide on his No 1 pairing.”
Arsenal visit Hull for their next assignment on Saturday as they aim to build on a four-match unbeaten run, including wins in their last two league encounters.
