Martin Keown has hailed the defensive partnership of  Tottenham duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen this season.

Spurs have the tightest defence in the league this term, with only three goals conceded after seven games, with the Belgian duo are key part in their success.

As a result Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain the only unbeaten side in the league, as they are only one point behind leaders Manchester City, after the north London club inflicted the first defeat on Pep Guardiola’s side, prior to the international break.

Former Arsenal defender Keown has been impressed by the defensive displays of Alderweireld and Vertonghen, as he gave his thoughts on who his early player of the season contenders are.

“I have been very impressed by Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen at Tottenham,” Keown told the Daily Mail. “Sometimes with defenders you want to talk about partnerships rather than individuals and these two look very solid, as they did last season.”

Alderweireld has played all seven league games for the White Hart Lane club this season, including participating in two Champions League fixtures, with the disciplined defender picking up no yellow cards.

By contrast Vertonghen has played the same amount of games as his international teammate, but has picked up two yellow cards in the process.

Spurs travel to the Hawthorns after the international break, looking to pick up their sixth consecutive win in all competitions against Tony Pulis’ West Brom.
