Steve McClaren arrived at Newcastle’s training headquarters on Tuesday amid growing speculation he is facing the axe.

The under-fire manager drew up in a chauffeur-driven car at the club’s Benton base early on Tuesday and was said to have snuck in through a back door to avoid being photographed.

A Sun reporter subsequently tweeted that McClaren had left the training ground “after less than an hour” as rumours grew that he had been relieved of his position.

However, it emerged that McClaren’s car had left the centre but the former England manager had remained at the club to take charge of the Tuesday training session.

It is expected that he could be called to a summit meeting after training and told that he is no longer the manager of the club.

Football Insider revealed on Monday evening that McClaren was facing the sack within 48 hours.

The club’s board met in York on Monday to discuss the manager’s future and the possible options available to replace McClaren.

The talks were led by managing director Lee Charnley, chief scout Graham Carr and club director Bob Moncur, with the likelihood growing that McClaren will be given his marching orders.

David Moyes, Rafael Benitez and Brendan Rodgers are among the managers who are available, while Nigel Pearson was installed as the favourite for the position on Sunday night.

McClaren is facing the axe following a catastrophic run of results that has left Newcastle second from bottom of the Premier League and facing the growing possibility of relegation.

Football Insider revealed in the wake of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth that the manager’s position was under growing threat.

There was a toxic atmosphere at St James’ Park on Saturday, with the home supporters jeering the players off at the final whistle as well as chanting that McClaren was taking the team down.

In other Newcastle news, club legend Alan Shearer has pointed the figure at Carr for the club’s disastrous recruitment in recent seasons.
