Sunderland are set to complete the season-long loan signing of former Liverpool defender Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid, according to a report.
David Moyes’ side are looking to bring in a full-back this summer after failing to secure a permanent deal for ex-loanee DeAndre Yedlin, who signed for Newcastle on Wednesday.
Sky Sports claim that former Spain Under-21 international Manquillo is currently on Wearside to complete a medical in what will be his third loan switch in three years.
Speaking after Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Cup, assistant manager Paul Bracewell confirmed Manquillo was completing medical tests at the club’s training ground.
Manquillo made 19 appearances for Liverpool during the 2014-15 season, with 10 of those coming in the Premier League. He found it difficult to break into the Reds’ first-team on a regular basis though, with the likes of Glen Johnson and John Flanagan starting over him.
Atletico Madrid’s number four spent last season on loan at French giants Marseille, becoming a first-team regular in a side that finished in a disappointing 13th position after making 43 appearances in both league and cup.
Marseille opted not to sign the defender on a permanant deal, and instead brought in Haroki Sakai from Hannover.
Brendan Rodgers, who signed the Spaniard for the Merseyside outfit, decided to cut short the previously agreed two-year loan deal at the halfway stage after Manquillo failed to impress.
The defender, who has two years remaining on his contract, is surplus to requirements at the Vicente Calderon Stadium after making just 17 appearances in three years for Diego Simeone’s side.
