Matz Sels is set to undergo a Newcastle medical after flying to England to complete a transfer from Gent, according to a report.
Belgium publication HLN claim the goalkeeper is in advanced talks to join the Championship club and become their first signing of the summer window.
It is said that Gent are holding out for a £5million fee for the 24-year-old, who flew to Tyneside on Monday to finalise the switch.
This came after the Chronicle reported that Newcastle would pay £4million for the shot-stopper.
West Ham and Middlesbrough have also been linked with signing Sels but, barring any last-minute hitches, the north-east giants now appear to have won the race.
With doubts over the future of Tim Krul and Rob Elliot still recovering from a serious knee injury, Sels is set to battle for the No1 spot.
Karl Darlow impressed as a stand-in for the final weeks of the 2015-16 season but Sels has the pedigree to be the first-choice at St James’ Park.
Sels is yet to earn an international cap for his country, but he was in the Euro 2016 preliminary squad before he narrowly missed the final cut.
The shot-stopper starred for Gent in the recently completed season, making 53 appearances in all competitions and conceding just 57 goals.
This included eight appearances in the Champions League where the Belgian side were knocked out by Wolfsburg in the round of 16.
In other Newcastle news, the club have reportedly secured a £13million midfielder deal after a breakthrough in talks.
