Liverpool and Tottenham are genuine title contenders after Manchester City’s latest Premier League horror show, according to Michael Owen.
City lost 2-0 at Stoke on Saturday, their fourth Premier League defeat of the season and their second in three matches.
Manuel Pellegrini’s team remained one point clear at the league summit before the rest of the weekend fixtures had been played but their vulnerabilities has opened the door to other teams.
Former England and Liverpool striker Owen is convinced that some unlikely teams are now in contention to win the most open title race in many seasons.
“With such an open title race that result will please such a lot of teams,” Owen told BT Sport. “Teams like Liverpool and Tottenham are brought right back into it, as well as the teams who are already there like City, Arsenal and Manchester Untied.
“It really does blow the title race wide apart. Stoke really did deserve this win today, they were outstanding.”
City began the season on fire with five consecutive victories but have failed to maintain those standards and have lost heavily to Stoke and Liverpool, who thrashed Pellegrini’s side 4-1 at Etihad Stadium, in two of their last three matches.
Liverpool are six points behind City with a game in hand, and Tottenham are four points adrift of the leaders.
