Micky Quinn has said he expects Liverpool to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
Former Newcastle forward and Reds supporter Quinn also stated that Liverpool will beat off competition from Everton to sign the 25-year-old defender, despite their rivals holding an ace card with manager Ronald Koeman. Koeman signed van Dijk from Celtic when he was at Southampton.
Liverpool have signed a number of Saints players in recent seasons with Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren just a few who have made the move from the south coast.
Centre-back Van Dijk is highly-rated for his ability to bring the ball out from the back, read the game and use his pace and strength to nullify a variety of forwards in the league.
Talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT, Quinn played down talk that rivals Everton would beat Liverpool to van Dijk’s signature.
“No, don’t worry about Ronald Koeman,” said Quinn, “Liverpool will blow them [Everton] out of the water. That’s what I’ve been told, anyway.”
Holland international Van Dijk has made 18 Premier League, Europa League and EFL Cup appearances for Claude Puel’s side this season, helping them to eight clean sheets.
He moved to the Premier League from Glasgow giants Celtic in September 2015 for a fee of £13 million.
Van Dijk was signed by Koeman who left Southampton in the summer to take over the managerial role at Everton following the sacking of Roberto Martinez.
In other Liverpool transfer news, the club are ready to push for a £25million deal for this attacker after Philippe Coutinho blow.
