Charles N’Zogbia is set to join French side Nantes, according to a report.
French publication L’Equipe claim that the Ligue 1 club is in advanced discussions with the midfielder over a possible move.
The report details that the 30-year-old will sign a one-year deal and was negotiating the terms on Wednesday.
Aston Villa released N’Zogbia at the end of his contract in the summer to end his disappointing five year stay.
The Frenchman took part in training with Sunderland as he began his search for a new club, but looks set to return to his homeland.
He made 3 appearances during his stay at Villa Park and made just two Premier League appearances last season as the club were relegated.
The twice capped French international did enjoy more successful spells in English football at Newcastle and then Wigan.
N’Zogbia scored 18 goals and supplied 20 assists in 90 matches for Wigan.
Current Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo made a summer clearcut and deemed the winger surplus to requirements.
Villa are attempting to return to the top-flight at the first attempt and have made a slow start.
The Midlands club have picked up just six points from as many games and sit just a point above the relegation zone.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, Tony Xia has revealed why the club failed with their summer pursuit of a Premier League striker.
