Georginio Wijnaldum appeared to wave goodbye to Newcastle fans ahead of through-the-night talks that have reportedly sealed his £25million transfer to Liverpool.

Sky Sports claimed on their website on Thursday morning that a fee has been reached between the two sides and he will now travel to Anfield for a medical.

Tyneside publication the Chronicle claim that the two parties held talks in the early hours of Thursday morning as Newcastle were apparently keen to end any uncertainty about the players future.

The report says that Newcastle chiefs told Klopp’s side to make up their minds on whether they could reach the club’s demands for a straight-up transfer fee.

The deal was struck just hours after Wijnaldum took time after his side’s pre-season friendly at the Keepmoat Stadium to applaud supporters, and say his goodbyes to a fanbase that has sung his praises since his arrival on Tyneside last summer.

The 25-year-old played an 11 minute cameo as the Magpies drew 2-2 with in their latest pre-season friendly against Doncaster.

Wijnaldum came from the bench on the 79th minute to a mixture of boos and cheers from the Championship club’s 2,252 travelling fans. The message from the majority of supporters was clear though, chanting that they wanted the Dutch international to stay at the club and fight for Premier League promotion next season.

Toon Boss Rafa Benitez spoke to the Shields Gazette after the game. He said: “He is still our player and that means he has to be ready for us. If something happens (with Liverpool), we will know in some days.”

“But until something changes, we will continue training and working with him, and we will continue playing him in the games.”

In other Newcastle news, former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has praised current Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez as the “best tactician” he has played for.
