Ayoze Perez could return for Newcastle’s clash against Rotherham on Saturday afternoon at the New York Stadium.
The 23-year-old attacking midfield player was an unused substitute during his side’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Norwich in midweek with Mohamed Diame selected over him.
However, many fans were left unconvinced with the Senegal international’s performance and compared him to former player Moussa Sissoko on Twitter.
Rafa Benitez could make two other changes to his side for the clash against the Millers, with Matz Sels and Isaac Hayden also returning to the squad’s line-up.
This means that the Spaniard is likely to drop Karl Darlow and Jack Colback back to the side’s bench.
Dwight Gayle is expected to keep his place leading the line after bagging a hat-trick in the victory over the Canaries.
Perez is likely to be behind him with attacking duo Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran either side of him.
Hayden will help shield the defence with former Liverpool man Jonjo Shelvey alongside him.
It is likely that Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark will keep their place behind the midfield two in an unchanged defence with DeAndre Yediln and Paul Dummett either side of them.
Newcastle are in indifferent form with one league victory from their last three fixtures, but they do sit in third place in their quest for an instant return to the Premier League.
They will see the Rotherham clash as a good opportunity to get a winning run started with the Yorkshire club failing to win in six clashes and propping up the league in bottom place.
The two sides haven’t met in the league since 1983 when Newcastle ran out comfortable 4-0 winners in the old Division Two.
In other Newcastle team news, The Football League has selected Dwight Gayle in their team of the week.
