DeAndre Yedlin made his first Newcastle start in their 2-0 win over Wolves on Tuesday night – and fans claimed he did enough to force his way into the starting XI for Saturday’s clash against Aston Villa.
Rafael Benitez’s team beat Wolves three days after losing to them in the Championship to clinch a place in the last-16 of the EFL Cup.
The performance of Yedlin was one talking point, and the general consensus was that the summer signing from Tottenham had grasped his opportunity after being handed his full debut by Benitez.
With Vurnon Anita suspended and Jesus Gamez struggling with a calf injury, USA international Yedlin started at right-back.
Supporters took to social media in the aftermath of the match to praise the 23-year-old’s athleticism and mobility, and claimed he can forge a thrilling partnership with Matt Richie on the right flank.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Impressed with Yedlin tonight. Good going forward and think his pace can help him deal with defensive issues. Starts Saturday for me #nufc

Yedlin – A real athlete; got up high to win headers & lightning across the ground. Looked sharp both defensively & going forward. #NUFC

Just back from the game. Lots of encouraging performances but Yedlin & Ritchie were outstanding. They’ll terrify sides going forward. #NUFC
