Newcastle have confirmed that Rob Elliot has signed a new four-year deal, and Toon fans are delighted that the goalkeeper has extended his stay at the club.

The north east side revealed on their official Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon that the 30-year-old had agreed new terms at the club.

Newcastle’s number 21 still had just under three years left on his former deal, but he has been rewarded at the club with a deal which will see him stay until he’s 34.

Newcastle fans reacted happily to the news with many believing that he is a solid goalkeeper to have within the club.

Elliot has featured in 49 encounters for Newcastle following his move from Charlton in 2011.

He has not played for the Magpies in the new campaign after he suffered a serious knee injury while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland in March.

Elliot also faces strong competition for a starting place in Rafa Benitez’s side when he does return from injury after the addition of Matz Sels this summer, alongside former Nottingham Forest number one Karl Darlow.

In other Newcastle team news, Olivier Bernard has claimed that new signing Mohamed Diame is a “matchwinner”, like his former teammate Moussa Sissoko.
