Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Newcastle will be appealing the red card given to Holland international Vurnon Anita during their 2-0 loss to Wolves on Saturday.
The 27-year-old star was sent off after a lunge on Wolves’ new signing Ivan Cavaleiro, but it appeared that the former Ajax man made no contact with the winger.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference prior to Newcastle’s EFL Cup third round tie against the same side, Benitez was quoted by the Magpies’ official Twitter account as saying that they would be lodging an appeal.
The makeshift right-back was given his marching orders with just three minutes of normal time to play after a dismal performance by Benitez’s team against Walter Zenga’s side at St. James’ Park.
Anita now faces a three-match ban if the club are unable to overturn referee Tim Robinson’s decision.
Benitez’s men will be hoping to get revenge on Tuesday night, as the Toon host their Championship rivals for the second time in four days with a place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup up for grabs.
Saturday’s loss has put a dent in the Championship giants’ momentum, as they had previously won six league and cup encounters in a row.
In other Newcastle news, the Magpies could sign this player for £10million in January.
