Newcastle United have launched a bid to sign Cambridge United wonderkid Leon Davies, Football Insider sources understand.
The Magpies, Everton Brighton and Aston Villa are among a host of Premier League and Championship clubs chasing the 17-year-old right-back.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the quartet have all made enquiries about signing Davies, and there is also interest in the teenager from their first and second-tier rivals.
League Two club Cambridge are reluctant to lose the emerging star, but are bracing themselves for strong interest in Davies before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
The 17-year-old is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the country after emerging onto the scene last season.
Davies has started Cambridge’s opening two games of the new campaign and has made 11 appearances in total for the club after breaking into the first team last season.
The attacking right-back, who is renowned for his pace and forward raids, was first named in the squad for a first-team game at the age of 16 and made his first-team debut in August of last year in the Checkatrade Trophy before he was handed his league debut in January.
Davies’ emergence at Cambridge has not gone unnoticed among clubs higher up the football pyramid, with the teenager tipped for a big future in the game.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are firmly in the running to sign another Liverpool attacking gem.
