Hearts ace Callum Paterson is on Newcastle’s radar after an approach from Wigan fell short of the mark, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claim Newcastle are looking for young talent to fill their Under-23 side and the 21-year-old is considered a realistic target.

The report claims that Wigan tabled a bid of £300,000, with add-ons to double that figure, but it was rejected last week and were told they would have to pay £1.2million for the defender.

The 21-year-old already has a wealth of experience in Scotland, occupying the Hearts’ right-back role for the past four seasons.

The Scottish Sun have previously claimed that Celtic are interested in the Scotland international, who made his debut against Italy in May.

Paterson, who made his Hearts bow at just 17, is integral to the Jambos but he is available for a relatively bargain price as he has just 12 months remaining on his Tynecastle deal.

Hearts would be entitled to compensation if they were to keep him for the final 12 months of his deal, although he will be able to talk to clubs in January.

The young right-back has already made 117 SPL appearances, and his defensive solidarity could be just what Celtic need as they look to retain the domestic title.

In other Newcastle transfer news, they join the race for a 24-year-old West Ham target.
