Newcastle have made an enquiry for versatile Genoa attacker Diego Laxalt, according to a report.
The Daily Mail have claimed on their live transfer blog (Saturday, 3.35pm) that the north east giants have made their interest known in the 24-year-old left-winger in preparation of their league opener against Tottenham on Sunday.
The Magpies have so far added Jacob Murphy, Florian Lejeune, Christian Atsu, Javier Manquillo and Mikel Merino to their ranks this summer.
However, they may now be looking at a left sided player and Laxalt boasts the ability to be able to play across the left flank as a defender and an attacker.
Last season he also played in 39 matches in all competitions for the Serie A club, returning four assists and one goal, but he has entered the final year of his contract at the side.
Both Atalanta and Fiorentina are also reported to be keen on Laxalt, but a move to the Premier League may prove more appealing for the three-time capped Uruguay international.
Football Insider verdict:
Laxalt’s versatility could make him a good squad option at Newcastle for their Premier League season. The north east giants will be aware that they can only register 25 players, which is proving detrimental to the club after building a large squad to ensure their promotion from England’s second tier. However, if they can get a player like Laxalt who can take up multiple positions they should certainly consider it. His stats don’t read too well and he may prove to be another Davide Santon for Newcastle, but he is also expected to cost very little given his contract situation and as the Magpies have struggled to get deals over the line this summer Laxalt may be the best they can wish to attract.
