Alan Shearer believes Newcastle have “messed up” their chances of securing Premier League survival after they were held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa.
Newcastle had several chances to go ahead in the game with Jack Colback blazing over from close range, before second half substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic missed two excellent opportunities to claim all three points.
The result drags the Magpies back into the bottom three after Sunderland came from 2-1 behind to stun Chelsea and steal a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Fellow relegation-battlers Norwich were also beaten on Saturday by Manchester United and Shearer has slammed his former club for failing to capitalise on the opportunity to put some daylight between them and the rest of the pack.

Sunderland are now a point clear of 18th-placed Newcastle with a game in hand over the Magpies.
Villa were on a run of 11 straight league defeats before Saturday’s game and Newcastle were hoping to put the pressure back on the Black Cats, who host Everton on Wednesday.
Rafael Benitez’s side are now reliant on Everton taking something from the Stadium of Light and know they must win their final game if they are to have any chance of staying up.
Newcastle face Tottenham in their last game of the season at St James’ Park.
