Jamie Carragher says Aleksandar Mitrovic reminds him of Newcastle’s all-time topscorer Alan Shearer.
Mitrovic scored a late equaliser to rescue a point in the Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland on Sunday and Carragher believes the 21-year-old shares traits with Shearer.
Newcastle’s most famous number nine is also the Premier League’s most lethal striker with 260 league goals and Carragher compared Mitrovic to the legend.
“Mitrovic had been getting no joy of the two centre-backs all day but he never gave up,” said Carragher speaking to Sky Sports after the game. “He does brilliantly to get to the back post and head home.
“He’s not got the number 9 on his back but it’s reminiscent of that typical number 9 type of goal – a Les Ferdinand or an Alan Shearer.
“The fans will love seeing that.”
Shearer spent ten years at Newcastle scoring 206 goals and left a legacy at St James’ Park that has yet to be rivaled.
Les Ferdinand was also a popular figure at Newcastle and managed a remarkable 50 strikes in 84 appearances in two years at the northern club.
Mitrovic arrived from Anderlecht in the summer and his header against Sunderland was his sixth goal in the league.
In other Newcastle news, Shearer was quick to put the derby draw into prospective.
