Newcastle can only survive if they sack Steve McClaren and immediately bring in Harry Redknapp says Chris Sutton.
McClaren is under immense pressure as Newcastle manager after the 3-1 home embarrassment to Bournemouth at the weekend left the Magpies second from the bottom of the table.
Football Insider has revealed that the former England manager’s head will roll within the next 48 hours and Sutton has singled one man to save Newcastle from the drop.
“If you want a quick fix, maybe someone like Harry Redknapp could go in and give Newcastle a kick up the backside,” said Sutton speaking on BBC Five Live Sport on Monday. “The simple fact is if they carry on with McClaren, they are doomed.”
Redknapp has not been in work since he resigned from his position as manager of Queens Park Rangers in February 2015.
The former Tottenham manager cited an upcoming knee surgery as the reason for his departure, but has not returned to football since.
The Telegraph has reported that Redknapp is keen to open talks with Newcastle with regards to a short-term deal.
Sutton, who won the Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers as a player, has little sympathy for current coach McClaren.
The former Chelsea striker said: “I read one of McClaren’s quotes earlier this week, ‘we have got to find fighters in the team’.
“That has been his job all season and he is now telling us with ten games left that they have to find fighters?
“It hasn’t happened for him and he can’t be coming out with those statements now. It’s his job. It hasn’t worked, Newcastle need a new voice.”
Newcastle travel to league leaders Leicester City next knowing that they are still just two points from safety.
