Football Insider rates the Newcastle players after they recorded a penalty shootout loss against Hull in the EFL Cup quarter final at the KCOM Stadium after the two sides drew 1-1 following 120 minutes of football.
Matz Sels – 7 Made a number of important saves as the game stretched in extra time. Could do little about Snodgrass’ equaliser in extra time.
Vurnon Anita – 7 Impressed once again on the right side of defence despite his natural position being a central midfielder.
Ciaran Clark – 7 Kept out Dieumerci Mbokani with ease, as he and captain Lascelles continued their fine form at the heart of the Toon defence.
Jamaal Lascelles – 8 Was a rock as Hull pressed in the second half to break the deadlock, once again showing maturity beyond his years. Provoked Mbokani into a red card.
Achraf Lazaar – 7 Yet to adapt to the physical rigours of English football, but impressed going forward. Hit the bar with a stinging effort in the second half.
Jonjo Shelvey – 9 Dominated the midfield with an impressive array of passing, as the Toon enjoyed the lion’s share of possession. However, missed penalty in shootout.
Isaac Hayden – 7 Impressed alongside Shelvey as he got forward more than normally.
Matt Ritchie – 7 Got in all of the right positions, but left his shooting boots at home. Withdrawn for on-loan winger Christian Atsu.
Mo Diame – 7 Failed to provide the difference against his old side in normal time, but prodded a loose ball home from a corner in extra time to give the Toon a 1-0 win.
Yoann Gouffran – 7 Looked classy on the flank for Benitez’s side, but failed to provide the cutting edge as the match went into extra time.
Dwight Gayle – 5 The striker found it difficult to get involved with the game bogged down in midfield and little chances being manufactured. Missed penalty in the shootout.
Christian Atsu (On for Ritchie 81 mins) 8
Daryl Murphy (On for Hayden 106 mins) 6
DeAndre Yedlin (On for Anita 106 mins) 6
