Newcastle forward Ivan Toney believes that his former side Northampton Town could beat Manchester United on Wednesday night in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The 20-year-old, who was signed by the Toon from Northampton last summer, is currently on loan at Shrewsbury after failing to break into the first team at St. James’ Park.

The youngster claimed on his personal Twitter account that he was set to be in attendance at Northampton in the hope of a giant killing, but would not be joining the “loud bunch” at Sixfields.

The attacker played 60 times for the Cobblers, but more than half of those were substitute appearances after coming off the bench 31 times. He scored a total of 13 goals in all competitions as well as adding another six in assists.

His impressive form earned him a move to the Magpies, where he has played a part in four games including two substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Toney also scored two goals in 21 appearances in all competitions for Barnsley last season as they gained promotion to the second-tier via the play-offs.

He still remains a fan of Rob Page’s side, after progressing through the youth academy at his hometown club and is hoping that the promoted League One side can continue their impressive form this season against Jose Mourinho’s United.

A win for Page’s side could see them produce one of the biggest scalps of this season’s EFL Cup, and be placed in the round of 16 alongside Arsenal, Chelsea and Leeds.
