Newcastle are ready to target Holland international Jetro Willems if they retain their Premier League status, Football Insider sources understand.

The North-east club are in the market for a new left-back this summer and are keeping tabs on PSV Eindhoven star Willems.

The 21-year-old was on Newcastle’s radar during the January transfer window but the Dutch club were unwilling to sell.

Liverpool are also monitoring Willems and sent a delegation to watch the defender in action for the national team in Amsterdam in Friday’s friendly against France.

As reported by Football Insider, Liverpool are in the market for someone to compete with first-choice Alberto Moreno on the left side of the defence.

Willems has won back his place for club and country after missing the first half of the season with a knee injury.

He has already amassed 171 senior club appearances and 16 Holland caps despite his tender age and is regarded as one of Europe’s finest emerging left-backs.

Willems is rated in the £11million bracket by PSV chiefs, even though his current contract expires in the summer of 2017.

Newcastle, who are three points adrift of 17th-placed Norwich in the Premier League, know that any move for the Dutchman depends upon them being in the top flight next season.

In other Newcastle news, Daryl Janmaat has revealed he has one eye on a transfer away from the club this summer.
