Newcastle youngster Isaac Hayden believes that midfielder Jonjo Shelvey could return to the England set-up if he continues his recent form.

Shelvey, 24, has been a big success at St James’ Park since he moved from Swansea in January, despite being unable to avoid relegation from the Premier League last season.

The central midfielder has been a key player in their attempt to return to the top-flight, featuring in all 16 of their Championship games this campaign.

Shelvey currently has six England caps to his name and has not represented his nation since 2015, but his Newcastle form suggests he is returning to top form.

The Magpies are currently top of the league table with a three-point advantage over Brighton and are considered heavy favourites to secure promotion.

Hayden, 21, feels that Shelvey has been performing at a very high standard in recent matches.

“If he plays at the same level he’s been playing at for the last few games then an England call-up wouldn’t be too far away,” Hayden said, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.

Gareth Southgate did not included Shelvey in his latest England squad during the international break despite his performances.

He has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals and supplying six assists.

The combative midfielder shows aggression in his tackles and has also demonstrated his long-range passing ability.
