Aston Villa have received interest for goalkeeper Brad Guzan from newly promoted Middlesbrough, according to a report.

The Birmingham Mail claim that the highly criticised Villa man has been targeted by the North-East outfit, as Aitor Karanka prepares for life in the top tier of English football.

The Midlands club conceded a record 76 goals in the recently concluded Premier League campaign, and American Guzan found himself at the brunt of the blame from the Villa faithful as they were relegated into the second tier of English football.

Numerous mistakes which led to goals and poor distribution were among the areas highlighted as failings from Guzan during his fall from grace over the last 24 months.

It is a stark difference from three years ago, when the 31-year-old signed a new four-year contract after a series of tremendous displays culminated in him being named Villa’s player of the year for the 2012/13 Premier League season.

The American has significant top-flight experience, with over 100 Premier League appearances, and could provide great cover for Boro’s Dimitiros Konstantopoulos, who kept a record 22 clean sheets in the 2015/16 title-winning Championship season.

Guzan, who was recently on international duty at Copa America with the United State,s was reported to have said that he will sit down with the Villa hierarchy and discuss his future with the club once the tournament had finished.

In other Aston Villa news, the Midlands club prepare to launch a bid for a free scoring Championship attacker.
