Olivier Giroud was handed his first start of the season against Ludogorets on Tuesday and in his post-match interview he gave a typically understated verdict on his team’s thrilling last-gasp win, saying it was “a good evening”.

It certainly didn’t start that way. Arsenal were two goals down after 15 minutes and their Bulgarian opponents were looking anything but a walkover after they were humiliated 6-0 in the reverse fixture at the Emirates.

Goals from Granit Xhaka and Olivier Giroud brought Arsenal level before half-time, but they had to wait until the 87th minute for their winner.

But what a goal it was. Mesut Ozil was put clear and, after chipping the ball over the goalie’s head, he put two defenders on the ground before slotting the ball home.

It was cruel on Ludogorets but Olivier Giroud was a happy man and was interviewed on BT Sport straight after the game.

“I am pleased for the team,” Giroud said. “It was a great delivery from Aaron for my goal. I finished the job.

“It was tough tonight and we were expecting a tough game. I was in the stands at the Emirates in the reverse fixture and they impressed me a lot, so we knew it wouldn’t be easy tonight.

“It was tough for them but we never gave up and we keep trusting in our game, it’s a good evening for us.

“We are in a strong run, we want to carry on our momentum but it’s still the beginning of the season. The PSG game will be massive. We’re doing well in the Premier League. We need to keep it up.”
