Ossie Ardiles has made a bold claim by asking whether Hugo Lloris is the best goalkeeper in the world after he signed a new deal with Tottenham.

The club announced on its official Twitter account on Thursday afternoon that the France international has signed a new contract which keeps him at the club until 2022.

The 29-year-old is regarded as one of best shot stoppers in the Premier League, after he helped Mauricio Pochettino’s side finish in a Champions League spot last season.

Lloris’ leadership, calmness and ability to bring the ball out from the back have been highlighted as he conceded a club-record low of 35 goals last term.

The news of Lloris extending his stay with Tottenham delighted club legend Ardiles, who posted this message on his personal Twitter account.

Spurs have continued their brilliant defensive record during this campaign as Lloris has managed to keep six clean sheets in 15 Premier League games.

As a result they have conceded just 12 goals from their opening 17 fixtures, with leaders Chelsea, who have won their last 11 games, only conceding less goals.

France international Lloris has built a strong partnership with his defensive backline, which has turned them into title challengers in recent seasons.

Kyle Walker, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose have played a big part in that success, with the likes of Eric Dier, Moussa Dembele and summer signing Victor Wanyama behind that midfield steel.

In the latest Tottenham news, supporters have reacted on Twitter to Toby Alderweireld contract speculation.
