Patrice Evra has called Luis Suarez “the best number 9” after paying homage to the former Liverpool striker on Instagram.
Suarez received the Golden Shoe award on Thursday after scoring 40 league goals for Barcelona last season, becoming European Football’s top goalscorer across the major leagues.
However, the award prompted words of congratulations from some of the most unlikeliest of footballers and former Manchester United defender, Evra was a shocking addition to those paying tribute.
The duo were involved in a famous racism scandal following a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United in October 2015.
Evra accused Suarez of being racist towards him and the Liverpool striker was found guilty by the FA and was forced to sit out eight weeks of Premier League action.
The situation was not resolved completely though and Suarez famously refused to shake Evra’s hand as the two sides then faced off again upon his return.
However, Evra posted a picture on his Instagram account and hailed the former Liverpool striker as the best number nine and ended the caption by saying, “I LOVE this game.”
Former Liverpool captain and teammate Steven Gerard, also paid his respects and agreed with Evra’s claim that Suarez was “the best number nine on the planet.”
